OLD TOWN – Friday, Oct. 27, was a beautiful sunny day. At Penobscot County Federal Credit Union in Old Town, representatives from Maine’s credit unions joined Brenda Davis, executive director of Cross Roads Ministries, an Old Town-based hunger agency that serves thousands in eastern Maine, to launch the fifth annual Maine Credit Unions’ Ending Hunger Walking Tour.

The event was an opportunity to celebrate the tour’s roots and launch Davis on a journey that will keep her away from her hometown for nearly a month.

Representatives from the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger sent Davis off on the Ending Hunger walking tour with the largest launch donation ever, $1,005. The five is a tribute to the Tour’s fifth anniversary.

The Walk, which officially began Oct. 30 in South Portland, is expected to traverse more than 600 miles and visit a record-setting 47 communities from Kittery to Madawaska. At each credit union Davis visits, she will pick up a contribution from the campaign as a way to support her cause.

Again this year, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger will make a $100 donation to a food pantry in each of the 47 communities Davis visits. In all, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger has pledged to contribute more than $20,000.

The walk is an effort on the part of Maine’s credit unions and Davis to build awareness about the problem of hunger in Maine during the month of November, which has been designated as Ending Hunger Month.

The walk will conclude with a special ceremony at Penobscot County Credit Union in Old Town on Monday, Nov. 27. Since 1990, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger has raised more than $2 million to help end hunger in Maine.
