News in brief GREENBUSH: DOT CLOSES ROUTE 2 FOR SLOPE REPAIR

A detour was reinstituted Wednesday afternoon after Department of Transportation officials discovered the weight and vibration of passing traffic was threatening the stability of the slope work. The detour re-routes traffic by way of Greenfield Road and Cardville Road. It is expected to stay in effect through the end of the week, according to DOT officials. Repairs began two weeks ago in an effort to divert surface water and relieve water pressure on the slope during heavy rain. The slope originally collapsed over Fourth of July weekend when oversaturated soil broke off and slid down the slope. DOT officials originally expected that a detour would be needed for only one day during the repair process. However, the impact of traffic after the road was reopened was threatening the stability of the work. Officials say the road will remain closed until they can re-assess the situation and develop a workable strategy for completing the project.
