The University of Maine’s men’s hockey program has a native of Newfoundland on the roster in impressive freshman right wing Teddy Purcell.
They will have another next season.
Andrew Sweetland, a native of Bonavista, Newfoundland, has verbally committed to attend Maine on a full scholarship.
He is the fourth leading point-getter in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League this season with 14 goals and 17 assists in 14 games for the Amherst (Nova Scotia) Ramblers.
“Andrew is very similar to Teddy in the way he thinks the game and in his skill level,” said Amherst coach Corey Crocker and director of hockey operations and player personnel.
“He has pro speed and his knowledge of the game is at the pro level for sure,” said Crocker. “His offensive ability is second to none. He has a knack for the net and he is so quick around the goal. His hands are so fast. He also has a pro shot and he can make plays.”
The 20-year-old Sweetland, who stands 6-2 and weighs 198 pounds, said his decision to attend Maine wasn’t a difficult one.
“The campus is amazing and the atmosphere in the rink with the fans and the band is unreal,” said Sweetland, a left hand shot who plays on the right wing. “And it’s good to have a buddy already down there. I’ve played with and against Teddy in different leagues. I know him well.”
Sweetland said he is looking forward to attending Maine.
“I’m really excited. I can’t wait,” said Sweetland.
His coming to Maine is contingent upon his acceptance into the school and meeting NCAA Clearinghouse requirements.
