The late Edward R. “Ted” Carrell of East Millinocket spent his entire 29-year teaching career bringing music into the lives of pupils of Medway Middle School. Carrell was 52 when cancer took his life on Oct. 11.

In his memory and to honor his dedication to them, members of his school community will host a benefit to assist his family.

A spaghetti supper for the family is set for 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at Medway Middle School.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children under 10 and $15 for families.

They may be bought from any MMS student or staff member and will be available at the door.

The fundraiser is being hosted by The Renaissance, a group of students working to make MMS a more caring community, together with other pupils, staff and parents of MMS.

The benefit honors this gentleman who also conducted school bands, taught fine arts, photography and algebra, and helped save lives as an emergency medical technician with the East Millinocket Ambulance Service.

Carrell’s teaching and caring did not end with the school day, however.

He also taught EMT and CPR classes, ensuring that others would be able to help their neighbors in time of need, as he had done.

Kristie Miner of Westgate Manor in Bangor invites all family caregivers and members of the community to attend an open house in recognition of November as National Alzheimer’s Month from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in Westgate Manor’s Residential Care Unit, 750 Union St., Bangor.

Janet Lewis, Best Friends trainer and Alzheimer’s and family caregiver specialist with Eastern Agency on Aging, will discuss “Memory Making with Life Stories.”

Dr. Toby Atkins will address other forms of dementia in a talk, “Is it Really Alzheimer’s?”

The Caribou Lions and Lioness Clubs invite you to attend a harvest dinner and dance beginning with a boiled dinner at 6 p.m. and dancing from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Nov. 11, at Spruce Haven in Caribou.

Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door, and may be purchased from any Lions or Lioness club member, at the Caribou Recreation Department, Par & Grill and Jade Palace Restaurant.

Lioness member Robyn Holdsworth e-mailed that the event benefits the long-awaited $3.37 million Caribou Wellness Center, which is expected to open in early 2008.

The Jerry T Duo will provide music for this “BYOB” event, which includes a 50/50 raffle and a raffle for 100 gallons of home heating fuel donated by Dead River Co.

Holdsworth added that the sponsors are grateful for other donations in support of the benefit from Pepsi Bottling Group, Paradis Shop ‘n Save, Save A-Lot and Sleeper’s.

Veterans, active members of the military and their supporters will participate in a 21-mile Veterans Day Memorial Road March beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at the American Legion Hall on Main Street in Waterville, and ending at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Capitol Park in Augusta.

A memorial service honoring all fallen veterans follows the march.

All veterans and their supporters are invited to participate in any part of the march or all of it.

The annual holiday card offering by Pine Tree Society featuring Maine artists is under way.

Since 1969, PTS has given Mainers the opportunity to buy these distinctive cards to benefit the organization’s program for Maine children and adults with disabilities.

This year’s cards feature the works of artists Carlton Plummer and Claudette Gamache.

Plummer’s watercolor is of two brothers dragging the family tree through their coastal village to their home.

The Gamache card is a pastel drawing of a Maine village at twilight with brightly lit, outdoor trees and candle-lit homes.

The cards come in two styles: Folding cards with matching envelopes and a choice of two messages or blank; and a blank postcard.
