Bucksport man indicted in store robbery

BANGOR – A Bucksport man charged with embezzling from Hancock County churches was indicted Monday by the Penobscot County grand jury on a charge of robbery.

John M. Charpentier, 39, was indicted for allegedly robbing the Mount Hope Variety Store in Bangor with a hammer Oct. 9. Employees recognized him as the man who dropped off the weekly payroll for the store.

Charpentier operated The Tax Man, a Bucksport-based business that provided accounting, payroll and tax services. Bucksport police have charged him with theft, claiming that he used the business to embezzle about $9,000 from the Pine Tree United Methodist Ministries, a consortium of five churches located in Bucksport, Orland and Penobscot.

After Charpentier’s arrest two days after the Bangor robbery, he allegedly told police that he had spent all of the $600 or $700 he took from the convenience store on cocaine, beer and cab rides.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on the robbery charge Nov. 11 in Penobscot County Superior Court.
