BANGOR – An Old Town teenager could be tried as an adult on felony charges related to an armed home invasion last month in Bangor.
Michael Tanguay 16, was charged Monday in 3rd District Court with robbery with a firearm, criminal threatening and possession of hydrocodone.
James Aucoin, assistant district attorney for Penobscot County, is seeking to have Tanguay tried as an adult.
Bangor police arrested Tanguay early Oct. 27, averting a situation that could have turned deadly after the youth allegedly forced his way into an apartment and demanded money and drugs at gunpoint.
Tanguay was armed with a handgun and wearing a mask when the incident occurred at the Hammond Street apartment shortly after midnight.
A hearing to determine if he will be tried as an adult has not been scheduled.
Tanguay, who is being held at the Mountain View Youth Development Center in Charleston, is due in court Dec. 4 for a status conference on his case. He will be evaluated by psychologists before the hearing, according to Deputy District Attorney Michael Roberts.
If convicted as an adult, Tanguay would face a mandatory minimum sentence of four years on the robbery charge. He could be sentenced to a lengthy term of probation as an adult, Roberts said. If convicted as a juvenile, he could be held at a juvenile facility until his 21st birthday.
