WWII vets to receive walking sticks

BANGOR – World War II walking sticks are back.

It’s been a few years since Cole Land Transportation Museum, with the assistance of Peavey Manufacturing, distributed Maine-made maple walking sticks to some 1,800 World War II veterans in Maine.

Last Memorial Day, the museum distributed about 150 bright-blue Korean War walking sticks free to veterans of that war who took part in the parade.

That activity will continue on Veterans Day, and once again the museum will distribute walking sticks free to WWII vets who take part. Peavey has made a new batch of walking sticks available to the museum at cost.

Walking sticks for both wars will be passed out from 9:30 to 10 a.m. on Wilson Street in Brewer as veterans gather for the parade. The requirements for both World War II and Korean vets who want to obtain a walking stick are:

. Bring an ID.

. Participate in the Veterans Day parade, either by walking with the veterans or riding in a bus provided for vets by First Student transportation.

Veterans from all eras are welcome to join the group in the parade.

The walking stick program will be expanded even further next spring, Galen Cole said.

On Memorial Day 2007, a new batch of walking sticks will be given out to Vietnam War veterans who take part in the Bangor parade on that day.
