I am writing in regard to the recent media coverage of the two Bucksport High School boys who have been expelled over something as trivial as song lyrics.
The night the report aired on local television, it was the opening story. It was followed by a story about a boy with a gun at school, and another one about a boy with a knife at school.
Then to add to the violence it was followed by the nightly war coverage. Artists use media that affect them, whether it is current events, love, family or personal experience that inspires their work. I find it hard to believe that two boys who are surrounded by violence are bashed for writing what they feel and see daily anywhere they look.
There have been many controversial musicians and artists over time. Look at Madonna, for example, yet she was, and still is, one of the best known musicians in the world. How-ever, the most concerning part is that we haven’t learned by now that it’s not the ones who voice their opinions that we have to be afraid of, it’s the ones who keep it to themselves.
