WATERVILLE – Jeff Smith scored on a 2-yard run with 4:47 left in the game Saturday as Bowdoin College defeated host Colby 13-10 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference football game at Seaverns Field.
The win gave Bowdoin its first Colby-Bates-Bowdoin title since 1998, as well as its first victory over Colby in eight years.
Smith’s touchdown came after a controversial pass interference call against Colby’s Brian Liberty on a third-and-8 play, giving the Polar Bears a first down at the 2-yard line.
Smith finished with 99 yards on 29 rushes, while Colby quarterback Justin Smith completed 13 passes for 161 yards.

At Lewiston, Jamie Walker accounted for 162 yards of total offense and Brandon Colon passed for 230 yards and two scores as the Bobcats earned their first win.
Bates amassed 309 yards of total offense, compared to just 134 for the Continentals of Clinton, N.Y.

UM club teams wins division title
At Orono, Kevin Williams scored on a 9-yard run in the third quarter as the University of Maine Black Bears club football team defeated the Central Maine Warriors 7-0 Sunday to win the Northeast Independent Football League East Division championship.
UMaine will play in the NIFL championship game at Manchester, N.H., next Saturday against the West Division champion Northeast Knights.
