HAMPDEN – Sam Petrie said he rarely sees anything like it.
No, the Old Town boys soccer goalie wasn’t talking about the wet, cold, windy weather for Sunday’s Maine Soccer Coaches Senior Bowl.
It’s not often Petrie faces so many tough shots on goal – or has to make so many acrobatic saves.
But Petrie and John Bapst of Bangor’s Chris Smith, who shared time in goal, held up against a barrage as the Eastern Maine senior boys all-stars beat the West 7-5 at Hampden Academy’s multipurpose field.
“I was extremely shocked at having to deal with so many shots so fast,” Petrie said. “The West team, they had a guy who just had a rocket. He had an amazing shot.”
Bapst’s Ian Bamford led the East with two goals, while Van Buren’s Riley Lizotte recorded the eventual game-winning goal in the second half.
The West girls, meanwhile, rolled to a 5-1 win over the East thanks to two goals by Greenville’s Hannah Breton.
Each game was played in two 60-minute halves with different groups rotating into the game in 15-minute increments.
In the boys game, Aaron Woodman of Dexter and Corey Underwood of Brunswick got the East off to an early lead, but the West eventually went ahead 3-2. Bangor’s JoJo Hwalek ripped a goal past the West ‘keeper to tie it up again.
The East went on a tear in the first 30 minutes of the second half with goals by Bamford, Penobscot Valley of Howland’s Ryan Ware and Lizotte, who gave the East enough of a cushion.
“It’s the best players from all over the state, [classes] A, B, C and D, all at once, you’re gonna get some goals,” said Bamford, who capped the scoring with 3:43 left in the game. “We just had to hold on. It’s less pressure but we still wanted to win it.”
Petrie and Smith faced blasts from West players like Traip of Kittery’s Ryan Birse, who had two goals.
Both defenses were cobbled together with players who had never played together before and in many cases didn’t know each others’ names. That made it hard for the goalies to organize the defense from the back.
“If we would have had a practice before the game it would have been great,” Petrie said. “But we worked fine together and it was a great game. A little wet, but that’s all right.”
In the girls game, Breton’s speed was well-suited to the field’s fast artificial surface.
“I adjust well. I know the turf’s fast and I’m excited for that,” she said. “[Richmond’s] Katie Cray, we played them this season and I told her, you know how fast I am. Let’s work off that. And that’s how the assist happened. I just broke off from my player and she carried the pass. It was just perfect.”
The West raced out to a 4-0 lead before Foxcroft Academy’s Leslie Martin scored off a pass from Sadie Ayoob of Fort Fairfield.
“I just to work hard for it,” Martin said. “It was a lot easier today with experienced players. We kept getting breakaways and we just had to follow through.”
The East had some chances on flurries, especially the front line of Bucksport’s Lindsey Gordon, Madawaska’s Ashley D. Cyr, and Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook’s Kaylea Collier. But they couldn’t get anything else by Cape Elizabeth goalie Marla Houghton.
“She’s amazing,” said Gordon, whose second-half blast was punched out by Houghton. “That’s why I like coming here to play. The best part is the competition. It makes for a good game.”
McAuley of Portland’s Mikayla Call also scored twice.
