Pray for great weather and then either fire up your engines or find the perfect place to view what certainly should be one of coastal Maine’s most delightful pre-holiday events.

Buddy Mills called recently to inform me that the 2006 Christmas Flotilla begins with assembly at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, at Jonesport Marina.

The flotilla traverses Moosabec Reach between Jonesport and Beals Island, covering the length of the reach to Hopkin’s Point, then returns to the marina.

After the Flotilla, Santa Claus, atop the firetruck, will travel through Jonesport, cross the bridge, cover Beals Island and return to the Jonesport Fire Station, where he will join you for refreshments.

“This is really a big thing for us,” Mills said, “and we’ve doubled our participation from the previous year. We think it’s going to be a good time.”

If you are interested in participating in the Moosabec Reach 2006 Christmas Flotilla, call Mills by Saturday, Nov. 18, at 497-2806.

The storm date is Saturday, Dec. 2.

In recognition of National Adoption Awareness Month, WKSU’s “Mike and Mike” Show will broadcast live from 7 to 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine, 294 Center St., Old Town.

The presentation will include planting a tree in honor of children who await an adoptive family.

Anyone interested in foster care, adoption or kinship care, and individuals invested in Maine’s children, are invited to attend.

Refreshments will be offered to go along with the music, and some lucky people will win prizes.

Dexter Regional High School student Danielle Dubois, writing on behalf of the DRHS Key Club, reports the group is conducting its annual Cereal Drive throughout the month of November.

“The cereal is collected and given to the Dexter Food Cupboard,” she explained.

Boxes or donations can be delivered during school hours to the DRHS office, or given to any Dexter Key Club member.

Also, courtesy of Abbott Memorial Library, club members will be giving away books during the DRHS Open House from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the high school.

Donations for the cereal drive also will be accepted at that time.

Beyond “An Inconvenient Truth: The Impacts of Climate Change on Our Coast,” is the subject of a lecture by Smithsonian Environmental Research Center senior researcher Dr. Bert Drake at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at the Marine Environmental Research Institute in Blue Hill.

The public is invited to attend.

To help individuals retain an accurate, written record of their medications, Waldo County General Hospital is offering its first Medication Safety Fair from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, in the WCGH Education Center, 118 Northport Avenue in Belfast.

Attendees should bring prescription bottles and any herbal supplements, vitamins or over-the-counter medications being taken regularly, and if you have one, a written list of those medications, to be checked for accuracy.

The Diabetes Education Clinic will offer free blood sugar and blood pressure screenings at the same time at the same site.

For more information, call WCGH community relations, 338-6204.

Randall Kluj, commander of American Legion Post No. 41 in Milo, is pleased to announce that the Post is hosting American Legion National Commander Paul A. Morin of Chicopee, Mass.

Morin will meet with Post members from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Legion Hall, and then attend a public Turkey Dinner beginning at 6 that evening at Milo town hall.

Admission is $12 per person or $20 for couples.

The event features a POW/MIA ceremony, a patriotic presentation by the Milo Elementary School Chorus, and presentation of American Legion awards.

The public is invited to attend, and reservations must be made by Wednesday, Nov. 15, by calling Kluj at 943-5509, or the Legion Hall at 943-2542.

Paul Cook of Bangor wrote the Bangor Daily News that “Operation Community Support and its many Battle Buddies would like to extend a thank-you to Fiesta Shows for the enormous support extended to our soldiers and their families” during the Bangor State Fair.

“Fiesta Shows’ generosity to deployed soldiers and their dependents, through the donation of nearly 200 unlimited-ride wristbands and free admission, was greatly appreciated.”
