Jin Roy, 55, of Old Town was driving Tuesday afternoon along Stillwater Avenue when her Toyota Camry was swept into the bog, according to Orono police Sgt. Josh Ewing
She was able to get out without injury, but about 15 minutes after the accident, the Maine Department of Transportation closed the stretch of Stillwater south of the Kelly Road in Orono and north of the Chase Road in Veazie.
Roy’s was the third vehicle to go off the road Tuesday near the bog, Ewing said.
“Probably 20 to 30 yards of the roadway is covered in water rushing across the road,” he said.
That stretch of Stillwater Avenue has been a problem spot for the last couple of years during the spring and periods of heavy rain, Randy Gray, regional superintendent for the Maine Department of Transportation’s Bangor office, said Tuesday.
The closed portion of Stillwater Avenue will remain closed until the rain stops and the water recedes, which is not expected to happen until later this week, Gray said.
“We’ll monitor it and whenever the water goes down we’ll reopen it,” he said. “There is not much we can do, the swamp is so high.”
Gray suggests extreme caution for drivers who encounter water crossing a roadway. In addition to the possibility of roadway washouts is the danger of hydroplaning, particularly after dark when visibility is low.
“It can be a very serious situation,” he said. “I would be very, very caution if you can’t see. It’s always better to be careful.”
