Perfect days propel 2 to division leads USA East stays close to defending champs

BREWER – Four-time defending champ MacLaughlin T&T captured all three of its matches and posted a perfect 24-0 record to surge into the Holiday Inn division lead on the second day of the World Team Candlepin Bowling Championship Wednesday at the Bangor-Brewer Bowling Lanes.

Moncton (New Brunswick) Fairlanes surged from fourth place to first in the Varney GMC division as it also turned in a perfect 24-0.

Pat Birchell sparked MacLaughlin’s of Halifax, Nova Scotia, as he bowled a 404 series, third highest of the day in the Holiday Inn division. MacLaughlin’s also compiled a 658 for the second highest game.

Consistency also paid dividends for the defending champs as Davey Somerton turned in an average of 131 through the two days while teammates Birchell, Chris Hollett, and Tony MacLaughlin are each averaging 129.

USA East, a group of mostly Maine and Massachusetts bowlers, slipped to second place despite turning in a strong effort with a 22-2 mark.

Nate Nealey is leading USA East with a 134 average while teammates Shawn Morrison (130) and Mike Morgan (129) are also turning in strong efforts. Charlie Milan III came off the bench to give his team a 144 game.

Halifax Fairlanes trails USA East and was paced by Nathan LeBlanc, who turned in a high game of 195 and high series of 446.

Claude Chavarie sparked Moncton Fairlanes’ surge into first place in the Holiday Inn division as he rolled a 419 series, second best in his division. Moncton also turned the third highest game, 638.

Moncton also benefited from consistent bowling with a 131 average posted by Chavarie, followed by Matt Cormier (130), Robbie Estabrooks (126), and Brian Bernatchez (125).

Stateside of Bedford, N.H., slipped to second place but received a division-best 165 game and 465 series from Jeff Surette.
