State Heisman winners

DUBLIN, Ohio – Two of Maine’s best scholar-athletes received prestigious recognition as the competition narrowed for the 2006 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. State winners based on outstanding achievement in athletics, academics and community service were:

. Meagan Tilton, John Bapst Memorial High School, Bangor.

. Owen Smith, Brunswick High School.

In addition, 18 students were selected as state finalists. There were nearly 15,000 nominees nationwide.

. Nicholas Hubbard, John Bapst Memorial High School.

. Kylie Bragdon, Sumner Memorial High School, East Sullivan.

. Ashley Marandola, Madison High School.

. Lacey Cartier, York High School.

. Emily Rousseau, Biddeford High School.

. Abigail Iselborn, Catherine McAuley High School, Portland.

. Melissa Harvey, Dirigo High School, Dixfield.

. Mollie Hammond, Waterville High School.

. Megan Korhonen, Greater Houlton Christian Academy.

. Corey DeWitt, Ellsworth High School.

. Matthew Low, Lawrence High School, Fairfield.

. Davis Mercier, Livermore Falls High School.

. David Gerrish, Mountain Valley High School, Rumford.

. Elliott Munn, Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.

. Matthew Burch, Lincoln Academy, Damariscotta.

. Drew Farrar, Greater Houlton Christian Academy.

. Thomas Caron, Community High School, Fort Kent.

Youth basketball

BANGOR – The Bangor Parks and Recreation Department will offer a youth basketball program for children in grades three, four and five. The program will run eight weeks beginning Saturday, Dec. 9, through Saturday, Jan. 27.

It is a competitive program, with separate leagues for boys and girls. The cost is $30 for Bangor residents, $40 others. For information, call 992-4490.
