Center Tanner House, the captain of the Penticton Vees in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League, has verbally committed to attend the University of Maine in the fall on a full scholarship.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound House currently has four goals and 24 assists in 24 games for the Vees after racking up 14 goals and 17 assists in 52 games a year ago. He is the team’s leading scorer.
“He’s an outstanding two-way player,” said Penticton coach-general manager Bruno Campese. “He’s a very good faceoff man. He’s very good in his own zone. He’s a very smart player. And he should put up pretty decent numbers at the college level. He has very strong playmaking abilities. He just needs to shoot more.
“His defensive strength makes him very effective in a lot of different situations. You can use him in the last minute of games; he can kill penalties and can also win big faceoffs in key situations offensively and defensively,” added Campese.
The 20-year-old House, a native of Cochrane, Alberta, is a hard worker and an outstanding leader, according to Campese.
“He leads by example on and off the ice,” said Campese.
“He’s good on his feet. He’s a really strong, powerful kid. He’s a very unselfish player. He’s a coach’s dream,” added Campese.
House said the decision was a “no-brainer.
“The interest they showed in me was awesome. I talked to all the coaches a lot and got a real good feel from them. And Maine has such a good reputation,” said House. “I’m really pumped. I think I’ll fit in pretty well there.”
House’s coming to Maine is dependent upon his acceptance into the school and meeting requirements established by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
Bears’ Hahn sidelined 3-5 weeks
Maine sophomore right wing Chris Hahn will be sidelined for 3-5 weeks due to a shoulder injury suffered in the second period of Sunday’s 8-2 loss to New Hampshire.
Hahn has three assists in 10 games but has been pointless in his last seven games.
“Chris made a big step from last year even though it hasn’t translated to the score sheet,” said Maine coach Tim Whitehead. “He has been physical and has played at a high pace. He has a lot of potential.”
Whitehead added that Hahn will be replaced in the lineup for Sunday afternoon’s game against visiting Boston College by Jeff Marshall, Tyler Czuba, or Tony Morrone.
Marshall is a sophomore who has played in three games this season while Czuba and Morrone are freshmen who have yet to play. Marshall didn’t register a point.
The Maine coach also listed senior right wing Keith Johnson as doubtful for the BC game.
Johnson, who had three goals and four assists in seven games, has missed the last three games with a knee injury suffered in a 4-1 win over Merrimack College on Nov. 3.
