AUGUSTA – The Internal Revenue Service on Thursday released the names of more than 240 Maine taxpayers whose refund checks were returned to the tax agency as undeliverable.

With an average refund of $542, the checks have a combined value of nearly $132,000, the IRS said. The checks can be claimed as soon as the owners update their addresses with the agency.

Many taxpayers miss their refunds because they move without notifying the IRS or the U.S. Postal Service.

Nationwide, nearly 100,000 taxpayers are missing out on income tax refunds worth $92.2 million because the checks were returned to the IRS as undeliverable.

The IRS said that the average refund on the returned checks nationally was $963.

The IRS is directing people who never got expected checks to the “Where’s My Refund?” site on its home page. They can also call (800) 829-1954.
