Haskell paces Maine Maritime to victory

CASTINE – Junior Adam Haskell scored three of his 11 points in the final minute Friday night to lead Maine Maritime Academy to a season-opening 55-52 men’s basketball victory over Maritime College of New York in the Maritime Classic Tournament.

Junior center Brandon Hall of Dover-Foxcroft scored 12 points for the Mariners and Marc McCorrison had nine points.

Justen Price scored 14 points for the Privateers.

Salve Regina 81, UM-Machias 61

At Bridgewater, Mass., Matt Grendal scored 26 points and recorded nine rebounds to lead Salve Regina past the University of Maine-Machias in the Bridgewater State Tip-Off Tournament.

David Butler led UM-Machias with 33 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Charles Calligan scored 12 points and Adam Pearce had 11 points.

Senior guard Burns scored her 1,000th collegiate point on a layup.

Shelly Gott-Stillwell had 17 points, nine rebounds and four steals for the Mariners. Julia Knights added 13 points and four steals and Megan Franklin scored 17 points.

At Gorham, Kari Simpson scored 16 points and added 13 rebounds and four blocks to lead the University of Maine-Farmington to an opening win over Bridgewater State University in the University of Southern Maine Tip Off Tournament.

Caitlin Laflin led the Beavers with 17 points and had 10 boards. Samantha Wiley scored 11 points and Karen Sirois added 10 points.

At Geneva, N.Y., junior Lindsey Hunter of Unity scored off a Lisa Strausbaugh assist at 39:45 of the second half to lead Messiah College past Bowdoin College of Brunswick in the NCAA Division III semifinal.

Ashley Mowery stopped 14 of 23 shots for 18-4 Messiah.

The loss ended Bowdoin’s 13-game winning streak. Kate Leonard made three saves on six shots for the 17-2 Polar Bears.
