BREWER – Given the 25th and final Brewer Turkey Trot 5K on the traditional Parkway South course, Jeff Caron and Josh Trevino gave the fast route a nice send-off.

Former cross country and track teammates at the University of Maine and roommates Caron, 23 and Trevino, 22, engaged in a duel in Sunday’s race, which was won by Caron in 14 minutes, 58 seconds to Trevino’s 14:59.

Trevino, knowing that Caron had the faster kick, made his move at the halfway point even though a tough hill with a half-mile to go was looming ahead.

“Since Jeff is a faster kicker than me I knew I had to make my move early on in the race,” Trevino said.

Paul Rupprecht ran to third in 15:17. Lisbon High School standout Tyler Clark, who recently finished third at the New England Championships, was fourth in 15:40 while Adam Goode was fifth in 15:49.

The women’s race was won by 24-year old Annie Howley, in 18:55, while Jen Campbell, 22, captured second in 19:04.

Former Sumner of East Sullivan runner Vanessa Brunton was third in 19:36, Kathleen Bell of Orono fourth in 19:55 and Hampden Academy senior standout Molly Peverada captured fifth in 19:56.

Rounding out the overall top 10 finishers were Dave Englehutt in sixth, Erik McCarthy seventh, Brendan Carr eighth, Chris Harmon ninth and Riley Masters 10th.

This year’s race set a record with 500 runners finishing the 5K. Brewer cross country coach Glendon Rand, who has run all 25 races and won the first Turkey Trot, finished 17th overall.

Caron, an Auburn native who now lives in Boston and runs for New Balance, made his move just after cresting the hill with a half-mile to go.

He admitted he did fear Trevino breaking his course record.

“With about 600-800 [meters] to go, I was like, I have to go for it,” Caron said. “I couldn’t risk having him take it from me, so I figured I’d go for it, if I die, whatever, I’m already dead.”

Trevino admitted he simply couldn’t match Caron’s kick.

“He put on a full sprint after the hill and I just couldn’t come back from it,” Trevino said.

Trevino’s strategy was to let Caron set the pace early on.

“My race strategy was to go out with Jeff straight from the beginning, and just stay off his shoulder,” said Trevino, who just concluded his senior season of cross country at the University of Maine.

Caron, whose course record of 14:57 will be in place for the foreseeable future with a new course coming next year, admitted he’d like the original course to remain.

“I’d kind of like to have the same course going,” he said. “It’s been 25 years and great names [are] on that [record] list,” added Caron, who is working as a project engineer at a Boston firm that designs water treatment plans.

Next up on Caron’s racing list is the 10K Club Cross Country Nationals in San Francisco three weeks from now.

“All the top club teams in the nation will be there, it’ll be a great time,” he said.
