PORTLAND – David Redmond, a close aide and friend to former Gov. Joseph Brennan, died in Florida on Saturday night at age 74.

Redmond met Brennan as a teenager growing up in Portland and went on to run his election campaigns for county attorney, legislator and governor.

Redmond served on the governor’s executive council and was chief of staff during Brennan’s first term.

“I have known Dave Redmond for a number of years and his loss will be felt by many,” Gov. John Baldacci said. “He was smart and always worked hard for the underdog. Dave Redmond was the classic public servant.”

A funeral Mass has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland.
