Brewer Middle School

BREWER – Students from the Jobs for Maine’s Graduates Project Reach program at Brewer Middle School participated in the 2006 Environmental Walk on Nov. 7. Students from the JMG Reach council walked to the Brewer recreation complex to clean up the area. They gathered about 16 bags of leaves and trash.

Before the Environmental Walk took place, JMG students went out into the community seeking donations for the Project Reach program and raised nearly $600. JMG Reach council President Michael Rudolf said, “It’s cool because we’re helping the community.”

JMG Project Reach student Earl Grover said, “It was cool because it felt like we were helping the entire city of Brewer.”

Theresa Proulx, JMG Project Reach council vice president, said, “It feels good to know that you helped someone.”

Central High School

CORINTH – Whitney Lord, a senior at Central High School, recently was given a $200 award from Student Paths, a national organization that helps students prepare for life after high school.

Lord was one of nine students in the region acknowledged for participation in the program during the 2005-2006 academic year.

Student Paths is a free program teachers implement in classrooms to guide high school students. Headquartered in St. Paul, Minn., Student Paths has given more than $150,000 to students and high school guidance programs since 1997. Hermon High School

HERMON – The administration and faculty of Hermon High School announced the students of the month for October. They are senior Taylor Maynard, daughter of Roy and Melony Maynard of Hermon; junior Katrice Bryant, daughter of William and Darcee Bryant of Hermon; sophomore Casey Gove, son of Steve and Jayne Gove of Hermon; and freshman Heather Johnson, daughter of Carol Lane of Dixmont and James Johnson of Winchester, Va.

Old Town High School

OLD TOWN – After a hiatus of several years, Old Town High School decided to put the pep back in Pep Club. Under the direction of foreign languages teacher Stephanie Ben Bouchta, the club’s goal is to foster school spirit, pride and sportsmanship through pep rallies, spirit weeks and involvement with sports teams and other clubs. The following officers were elected: Mindy St. Louis, president; Meisha Lynch, vice president; and Lindsey Geroux, treasurer.

Old Town High School Key Club is under the direction of math teacher Shannon Gallant. On Halloween, many members participated in trick-or-treating for UNICEF, raising money for children with HIV and AIDS in Africa. Currently, club members are making necklaces for an organization to help low-income mothers. The necklaces help keep babies from getting distracted while nursing. Future projects include planning a holiday activity at the Marsh Island Apartments and participating in a 30-hour fast with the college group Circle K. Key club officers are Mia Caballero, president; Erin St. Peter, vice president; Kate Goodness, treasurer; and Bradie Manion, secretary.

Members of the JROTC Battalion marched in the Bangor Veteran’s Day Parade on Nov. 11. Participating cadets were Felicia Allen, Dustin Alley, Jessy Armstrong, Robert Bickford, Robert Bickmore, Nicholas Boucher, Caitlin Carroll, John Collins, Vance Deshane, Nathan Edwards, Dustin Fowler, Ryan Gilman, Maryanna Hatch, Alex Hogan, Benjamin Honnell, Lee Larry, Jakob Larson, Jared Miller, Joshua Miller, Bradley Miller, Lela-Michelle Newbury, Brendan Paradis, Mark Rieke, Kevin Roy, Joe Sayers, Andrew Smart, Ashley Smart, Lawrence Tiller, Rebekah Wheaton, Hannah Willard, Moriah Willard, Travis Winchester, and Matthew Young. Master Sgt. (Retired) Michael Olsen was the faculty adviser for the parade.

Returning to Old Town, the cadets stopped to perform a flag raising ceremony at the Old Town VFW. They replaced the national and state flags that had become worn from exposure to harsh Maine weather. This was a follow-up to the repair of the VFW Memorial that was accomplished the week before by members of the VFW and cadets from Old Town High School.

Young Leaders Conference

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Olympia J. Snowe met with high school students participating in the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. Spencer Hoyt of Camden and Kelsie Anderson of Etna took part in the six-day program.

The National Young Leaders Conference is sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council. Students spend the week meeting with members of Congress, participating in interactive activities, and debating current issues. The program is designed to educate and inspire future leaders who desire an opportunity to learn outside of the classroom.

University of Maine

ORONO – One hundred students in the University of Maine’s College of Education and Human Development were recognized recently for outstanding academic achievement. The students were honored at the Fall Presidential Academic Achievement Award ceremony attended by faculty and family members.

College Dean Robert Cobb congratulated and presented each student with a Presidential Academic Achievement pin. The one-time award is presented to students with a 3.5 or higher grade point average during the most recent semester and a 3.0 average over the past two semesters. For part-time students, the award goes to those who have a 3.5 grade point average over the past 12 credit hours and at least a 3.0 average based on a minimum of 30 credit hours at UMaine.
