EMMITSBURG, Md. – Jon Sheets buried his fifth 3-pointer of the game with 2:01 remaining Wednesday night, lifting the University of Maine men’s basketball team to a 68-65 victory over Mount St. Mary’s University at Knott Arena.

Sheets connected for a game-high 19 points, going 5-for-9 from 3-point range, to help coach Ted Woodward’s Black Bears improve to 3-4.

The Mount (1-5) missed three potential game-tying 3-point shots during the last two minutes, including two in the final 10 seconds.

Junior Bernal tossed in 16 points and handed out five assists for UMaine, while Kevin Reed netted 11 points. Chris Bruff chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds.

The Bears shot 52 percent from the floor (23-for-44), including 62 percent in the second half, and outrebounded the hosts 31-28. However, UMaine committed 18 turnovers to 11 for The Mount.

Jeremy Goode and Sam Atupem paced Mount St. Mary’s with 13 points each, while Will Holland and Chris Vann connected for 11 points apiece.

The Bears built a 53-45 advantage, its largest of the contest, with 12:05 to play.

With UMaine leading 46-44, Bruff opened a run with a layup. After Markus Mitchell made one free throw for Mount St. Mary’s, Sheets hit a 3-pointer and Houlton native Mark Socoby followed with a layup to give the Bears an eight-point edge.

However, The Mount responded with a 10-2 flurry, capped by a Vann 3-pointer, that made it 55-55 with 8:16 remaining. The hosts later led briefly, but couldn’t hold on.

UMaine returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. at New Jersey Institute of Technology, a newcomer to the Division I ranks.

Zak Ray scored 16 points while Rob Stockwell added 15 for the Bobcats.

At Farmington, Sean Fry scored 17 points and Isaac Hutchinson 14 to lead the Beavers past the Terriers of Waterville.

The Beavers scored the first dozen points of the game en route to the win. Josh Tanguay added 10 points for UMF (2-2), and Tyler Tracy posted nine points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Aecio Madeira topped the Terriers (1-3) with 16 points, and Darrel Rose had 11 points.

Women’s basketball

Maine Maritime 66, Colby 50

At Castine, Alyssa Burns registered 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists and six steals to lead the way for Maine Maritime Academy as it defeated Colby College.

Megan Franklin and Michelle Gott-Stilwell each scored 11 points for the Mariners.

Tracy Nale led the way for Colby with a game-high 21 points.
