ORONO – What a difference a day makes.

Northeastern University’s Huskies rebounded from a 7-2 Saturday loss to the University of Maine to thoroughly outplay the Black Bears en route to a 6-2 triumph Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena.

Freshman left wing Chelsey Jones, who has been invited to the U.S. national team’s camp during the Christmas break, collected her first collegiate hat trick (three goals) and assisted on junior linemate Nikki Petrich’s two goals as the Huskies snapped a five-game losing streak. They improved to 3-12-1 overall, 2-7-1 in Hockey East.

Maine fell to 6-8-2 and 1-5-2.

Erin Reil from North Berwick scored the other NU goal while Maine sandwiched first-period power-play goals from Jenna Ouellette and Brigitte Laflamme around one by Jones.

The Huskies scored five second-period goals, out-shooting the Bears 10-2.

“That’s hockey,” said Northeastern coach Laura Schuler. “One day you do everything right and the puck bounces your way and the next day it can go the completely opposite way.

“Today we played phenomenally. This is the best I’ve ever seen them play,” added Schuler.

Jones said, “Today was a new day. Yesterday was very disappointing. But we came together and we all decided that today we could make a change. We could start over. We can choose if we want to win or want to lose.”

“We knew we could come back today,” said Reil. “We were down four goals the first time we played them [and won 6-5 on Oct. 22]. That’s how we can play and yesterday we weren’t on.”

Maine senior defenseman and co-captain Kelly Law said, “we beat them so badly [Saturday], we expected an easier game today. You can’t do that.”

The tenacious Huskies completely outworked the Bears over the first two periods, consistently beating them to loose pucks. That translated into several second and third chances in front of the Maine net. They limited the Bears to just one shot at a time with their relentless backchecking.

NU outshot Maine 19-6 over the first 40 minutes, including 10-2 in the second period.

Reil, cheered on by brother Nick, a UMaine student, and his Theta Chi fraternity brothers, triggered the second-period flurry 4:54 into the period. The defenseman closed from the point and snapped a Liz Chapman pass between the pads of UM goalie Genevieve Turgeon.

Jones gave NU the lead for good on the power play 2:23 later when Crystal Rochon fed the puck from the point to her in the circle to the right of Turgeon and she one-timed it through Turgeon’s pads.

“I just threw it to the net trying to create a rebound for my wingman. Luckily, it went in,” said Jones, who converted a breakaway off a Ginny Berg pass 4:42 later.

Jones sliced right to left across the top of the crease and scored off a rebound after Turgeon stopped her first shot.

“She made a nice save and slid over with the puck. I pulled it back and tapped it in the short side,” said Jones.

Petrich and linemates Jones and Amy Goodney created the next goal with a sustained forecheck and multiple-shot flurry.

Petrich eventually corralled the puck in the left circle and “threw it on net” over Turgeon’s stick-side shoulder.

Turgeon was replaced by Rachel Gettings and Petrich finished off a well-executed two-on-one by snapping Jones’ pass into the short-side corner.

“We didn’t once move our feet in the second period,” said Maine interim head coach Lauren Steblen.

Sarah Bellevue made 18 saves for NU, 14 in the third period.

On Saturday, Sonia Corriveau had a hat trick, including two in a four-goal second period outburst, and Vanessa Vani had a goal and four assists as Maine triumphed.

Robyn Law had a goal and two assists and Maine also received a goal from Pam Patterson. Gettings made 15 saves.

Annie Hogan and Jones scored for NU and Belliveau made 26 stops.
