A good cause

The article by Kevin Miller (BDN, Friday, 1 Dec.) that reviewed the present shortfall in funding in advance of the Dec.15 deadline, should spur all who revere and respect Gov. Baxter’s bequest to us, the citizens of Maine, to return our thanks to his memory by making a donation, however small, to the trust in order to make the addition of Katahdin Lake to the park a reality.

You might say that a few dollars that you reach deep into your pocket to donate, would make barely a dent in the $1.8 million needed, but if all those who see this acquisition as truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity act now, sheer numbers of donors could help convince the major potential funding sources to come forward to complete this deal. My wife and I contributed last June, and we were hopeful that many hundreds of others would do likewise. So far, around 800, and that number includes the “majors.” It could so easily be 8,000, or even 10 times that number. It is still not too late. Send your check to Katahdin Lake Campaign, c/o The Trust for Public Lands, 377 Fore Street, Portland, ME 04101, or you may contribute via their Web site: katahdinlakecampaign.org.
