Bangor man, 23, charged with assault in birthday party fray

When Bangor police officers arrived at the Third Street apartment of Vernon Goguen, 23, early Thursday morning, he opened the door with a baseball bat in his hands poised to swing.

Goguen had attended a birthday party on Cedar Street and apparently got into a scuffle with a man who was hit in the face, put into a headlock, and whose head was smashed through a window.

Both men were intoxicated at the time, the police report states. When leaving the party, Goguen also apparently ripped the front door off its hinges.

Police arrived at Goguen’s apartment at 2:04 a.m. and summoned him for simple assault, a Class D crime, and criminal mischief, a Class E crime.

A wanted poster for Adam Freeman, 20, a Bangor transient, was posted at the Bangor Police Department for his failure to show up for court on a criminal mischief charge, and it led to his arrest Wednesday night.

Freeman was a passenger in a white Subaru Legacy with a burned-out rear brake light that was stopped on Main Street at 9:47 p.m., and he gave a false name – Adam Numinhan – to the officer who recognized him from the poster.

Freeman was arrested on the warrant and for providing a false name, address and date of birth. He was transferred to Penobscot County Jail where he remained Thursday.
