Christmas concert, fundraiser planned in Brewer

Brewer Hometown Band director Jan Cox invites you to what she describes as a very special, “real” Christmas concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, in Brewer Auditorium.

“The band will be joined by singers from the surrounding area, to provide an exciting program of Christmas music,” Cox wrote.

“In addition, we have an 11-year-old soloist, Rose Upton, who will astound the audience with ‘Ave Maria,’ ‘O Holy Night’ and other songs.”

The daughter of Tim and Boo Upton of Orland, the young singer is a student of Joan Mercer of Bucksport, “with whom she studies voice and piano,” Cox wrote.

The event also will include door prizes and refreshments.

And while admission is free, Cox and the band request that you bring donations of nonperishable food for the Brewer Ecumenical Food Cupboard, which is located in St. Patrick’s Church.

The Bangor West Side Little League Baseball and Softball programs will hold a Basket Bingo with doors opening at noon and games from 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 10, at the Elks Club on Odlin Road in Bangor.

Tickets are $12, and only 200 are available. The fundraiser includes 12 regular games, one Blackout game, door prizes, a raffle prize, a 50-50 drawing and food available for purchase.

Bon voyage to everyone accompanying the transportation of Christmas wreaths leaving Sunday, Dec. 10, from Worcester Wreath Co. in Harrington for Arlington, Va., where, on Thursday, Dec. 14, thousands will be laid on graves of veterans at Arlington National Cemetery.

Morrill Worcester started this program 15 years ago and this year expanded it to Wreaths Across America, with wreaths being placed at more than 230 state and national cemeteries and veterans monuments.

Olive Benton of Bangor, secretary of Burton-Goode-Sargent Chapter of Korean War Veterans, reports a Laying of Wreaths Across America Ceremony will begin at noon Thursday, Dec. 14, at the Maine Korean War Memorial at Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor.

“This ceremony will be taking place, at the same time, across the country,” she said.

The wreaths at the Korean War Monument in Bangor will be laid in honor of “each branch of the service, for all veterans and for those whose last known status was either a prisoner of war or missing in action,” Benton wrote.

“These holiday wreaths are to symbolize our honor to those who served, and are serving, in the armed forces of our great nation, and to their families, who endure sacrifices every day on our behalf,” Benton added.

“Everyone is welcome to attend.”

Kevin Birch, director of the Chamber Choir at St. John’s Catholic Church, invites the public to enjoy Sacred Music for Advent at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, at St. John’s Church, 207 York St. in Bangor.

The program features Anatole Wieck and Sarah Judkins on violin, Lisa Nielson on cello and organist Steve Burgess.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Here’s a reminder the Woodlawn Museum Candlelight Evening is 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, on the museum grounds on Route 172 in Ellsworth.

You will enjoy caroling, a bonfire, a reading of “The Night Before Christmas,” a Santa Claus visit, and holiday music.

With members of Ellsworth High School Key Club, children will make Victorian ornaments to hang on the Ellsworth Area Community Christmas Tree donated by New Land Nursery; Boy Scouts will help light the 500 luminaries sponsored by community members who donate $2 for each luminary in honor or memory of someone; and the Blue Hill Brass will entertain.

Admission to the Candlelight Evening is free, but donations are appreciated.

With traditional dishes and holiday stories, Mireille Le Gal wrote that Women of the World will celebrate a Swedish Christmas at noon Monday, Dec. 11, at Church of Universal Fellowship on Main Street in Orono.

Sponsored by the Office of International Programs and National Student Exchange at the University of Maine in Orono, WOW includes both international and American women who meet once a month to learn about new cultures and discover new cuisine.

Lunch fees are $4 for women and children over 10, $2 for children 6-10, and free for children under 6 attending with their mothers.
