LINCOLN – Bree Hanscom scored the game-winning free-throw with three seconds left Tuesday night to lift Mattanawcook Academy to a 52-51 girls basketball victory over Stearns of Millinocket.

Hanscom finished with nine points and nine rebounds. Michelle Paul led the Lynx with 15 points while Brooke Hanscom added 11.

At Alfond Arena in Orono, Old Town’s Dan LeBretton made 46 saves to outduel Skowhegan’s Jimmy Quirion (36 saves) as the Indians opened the season with a victory.

Jason Smith scored two goals, one in the first period and another in the third, for Old Town. Josh Hesseltine tallied one goal, the game-winner in the second period, and assisted on both Smith goals.

Nick Covell and Gary Johnson also notched assists.

Nate Powers scored late in the first period for Skowhegan.

Bangor 1, Waterville 0

At Alfond Arena in Waterville, Jon Hyatt’s shot from the far side crease 13 minutes into the second period gave Bangor the win.

Dave Pardilla fed Hyatt from behind the net on the goal. The Rams improved to 2-0 as Andrew Riley saved all 25 shots he faced.

Nolan MacDonald made 19 saves on 20 shots for the 0-1 Purple Panthers.

Orono 5, Presque Isle 5 (OT)

At Presque Isle, Brendan Shaw scored a backhanded goal off a rebound at 11:17 of the third period as Presque Isle rallied to tie Orono.

Ben McPherson paced the 0-1-1 Wildcats, who trailed 2-0 after the first period, with two goals while Matt Talbot and Greg Cyr added one each. Ethan Hill had 27 saves on 32 shots.

Sean Babin, Tony Raymond, Nathan Curtis, Mark Cloutier and Dan Ohno each had a goal for the 0-1-1 Red Riots. Jared Buzzell stopped 28 of 33 shots.

At Millar Arena in Houlton, Morgan Hall had three goals and Sharif Abouleish and Chris McGuire had two each as Houlton-Hodgdon cruised in a mutual season opener.
