This takes the cakes

Congratulations to Tammy Spaulding of Glenburn, whose recipe for Cream Filled Chocolate Cakes (a k a whoopie pies) was chosen for the recently published “Wal-Mart Family Cookbook.” The store annually invites its employees to submit recipes, and winning dishes are printed in one of five regional cookbooks. The book costs $4.96 and is available at Wal-Mart stores.

Spilling the beans

OK, the secret’s out: Shipwreck Coffee Co. in Veazie roasts some of the finest java around. The name was Inspired by Maine’s 3,500 miles of rocky shoreline and the maritime tales that it conjures. As for the brew, well, it’s enough to perk you up even if you’re a shipwreck in the morning. The beans cost $8.99 for a 12-ounce bag, 5.99 for 8 ounces of grounds at Bangor Wine and Cheese. They’re also available Saturdays at the European Farmers Market on Buck Street in Bangor, or online at shipwreckcoffee.com.
