Big School (Classes A-B)

DEREK LIBBEY

The junior guard on the Mattanawcook Academy boys basketball team averaged 25.5 points per game in helping the Lynx get off to a 2-0 start. Libby scored 27 points in a season-opening win over Foxcroft Academy, then had 24 points as MA defeated Stearns of Millinocket.

Small School (Classes C-D)

DREW FARRAR

A senior guard on the Houlton basketball team, Farrar led the Shiretowners to a pair of victories to open the season. Farrar had 19 points in a victory at Madawaska, then scored 15 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as Houlton rallied past Schenck of East Millinocket.

GIRLS

Big School (Classes A-B)

TANNA ROSS

A senior guard-forward on the Hampden Academy basketball team, Ross netted a game-high 16 points to lead the Broncos to a key early-season victory over rival Bangor.

Small School (Classes C-D)

KELSEY LAVERTU

A senior on the Penobscot Valley of Howland basketball team, Lavertu led the Howlers to two wins to open the season. She had16 points in a victory at Orono, then scored six of her 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Howlers past defending state champion Dexter.
