SACO – Longtime Biddeford football coach Mike Landry died Tuesday surrounded by family at his home, ending a two-year battle with cancer. He was 58.
Landry grew up in Biddeford and coached there for 17 years, leading the Tigers to six state championships and compiling a record of 135-38. He was widely regarded as one of the state’s best high school football coaches.
After his final state title in 1993, he took a nine-year respite from full-time coaching before taking a job in Westbrook before the 2003 season. But he gave up coaching after he was diagnosed with melanoma, a form of skin cancer, two years ago.
In his final public appearance, hundreds of friends, coaches and former players paid tribute to him at a “living wake” at the Elks Club in Saco last month. At the time, it was announced Landry will be inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame and the Maine Sports Legends Hall of Fame next year.
Landry is survived by his wife, Carol, two daughters and three grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be 2-4 p.m. Thursday at Hope Memorial Chapel in Biddeford. Funeral services will be held Friday at Most Holy Trinity Church in Saco.
