AUBURN – A Lewiston man charged with fatally shooting his father at the older man’s 65th birthday party remained in jail without bail after pleading not guilty in Androscoggin County Superior Court.
During Tuesday’s hearing, Scott Poirier, 34, was ordered to submit to a psychological evaluation to examine his state of mind at the time of the shooting on Nov. 8.
Police believe Poirier stood in his father’s yard and fired a rifle through a sliding glass door. Roland Poirier was hit in the neck as he sat at the table celebrating his birthday with a roomful of family and friends.
Poirier, who told police he’d been sexually abused by his father, became enraged and punched holes in the wall of his home hours before the shooting, his roommate told police.
A relative told police that Poirier said, “Lies will end tonight. Take care of my boys; I am a good dad.”
Poirier told police he wanted to protect his own children from abuse. Roland Poirier had never been charged with any crime involving sexual abuse.
