Bangor Key Club

BANGOR – The Bangor Key Club is very busy fundraising. Members raised $389 during their annual Rock-a-Thon held at the Bangor Mall for Destination Kampala, an infrastructure project which provides school supplies and building materials to benefit children in sub-Saharan Africa.

In addition, the club’s fall penny drive for the Pediatrics Trauma Center in Boston brought in more than $257, with the freshman class of Key Club raising the most money. The Key Club from Bangor High School will help the American Red Cross at its holiday gift-wrapping booth at the Bangor Mall and will answer the phones for MPBN during its annual fundraiser in December.

Old Town High School

OLD TOWN – Students of the Month for October at Old Town High School are freshman Felicia Allen, sophomore Bradie Manion, junior Joe Sayers and senior Ryann Grant.

The November “In It to Win It” winners are social studies teacher Marty Clark and sophomore Trisha Smart.

November Students of the Month are freshman Lucas Bartlett, sophomore Jean Gamperle, junior Chelsie Libby and senior Gena Kenneway.

Scott LaFlamme is the first Old Town High School senior to be accepted into college for the 2007-2008 school year. He will attend Thomas College in Waterville to study communications.

Korey Parent has been accepted at Daniel Webster College to study aviation and air traffic control.

Krystyna Libby has been accepted at Husson College to study business administration.

Matt Willey has been accepted at Husson College to study accounting.

New scholarships in the guidance department are:

. Sam Walton Community Scholarship. Must have an 85 or higher GPA, apply to a two- or four-year college in the United States, have taken the SAT I or ACT, and be a close relative of an employee of Wal-Mart. Scholarship amount is $1,000, deadline Jan. 20. Online application may be found at www.scholarshipadministrators.net.

. University of Maine Visual Arts Awards Scholarship. The $1,000 award must be applied for through the guidance office before Jan. 24.

. Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship. The award is open only to juniors with a 2.75 or higher GPA. There are nine state awards of $25,000 and nine national awards of $25,000. Application deadline is Jan. 31.

Scholarships for Maine women

BANGOR – The BPW-Maine Futurama Foundation established by the Maine Federation of Business and Professional Women offers four scholarships to be awarded to Maine women through the BPW-Maine Foundation Scholarship Program.

Germaine Murphy and Anne Spencer, co-presidents of the Bangor BPW Club, and Julie Antworth, local BPW scholarship chairwoman, announced that completed applications must be received by April 20 to be considered for the 2007-2008 school year. Each scholarship provides $1,200 for school expenses.

The scholarships are:

. The Rachel E. Lemieux Youth Scholarship, given in memory of the late Rachel Lemieux of Augusta, awarded to a high school senior or recent graduate who will attend college in the fall of 2007. Application forms are available at the guidance office of area high schools or from the local BPW scholarship chairwoman.

. The Arline Andrews Lovejoy Youth Scholarship, given in memory of the late Arline Lovejoy of Wayne and Winthrop, awarded to a high school senior girl or recent graduate who will attend college in the fall of 2007. Application forms are available at the guidance office of area high schools, or from the local BPW scholarship chairwoman.

. The Continuing Education Scholarship, awarded to a woman whose post-secondary education is in progress. An applicant must have completed at least one year of an accredited college or training program and must enroll for at least one more year to complete the educational program. Application forms may be obtained from financial aid offices of Maine colleges or from the local BPW scholarship chairwoman.

. The Career Advancement Scholarship, awarded to a woman 30 years of age or older who is enrolled in an accredited college or training program of study. Application forms may be obtained from the financial aid offices of Maine colleges or from the local BPW scholarship chairwoman.

Applications and supporting documents are to be sent to the local BPW contact. Financial need and educational goals are important criteria in consideration for the scholarships.

Maine Business School at University of Maine

ORONO – The MBA-MSA Association of the Maine Business School at the University of Maine elected new officers in November for 2007. All are students in the master of business administration or master of science in accounting program.

Bangor native Steve Parlee, who works as a distribution supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service center in Hampden, was elected president. Parlee earned undergraduate degrees from UMaine in 1994, in political science and sociology. He succeeds outgoing president Jaime Call-Laliberte of Bangor.

Peter Harriman of Stillwater was elected vice president of networking and social interaction. He received an undergraduate degree in political science from UMaine in 2002, and most recently worked for U.S. Cellular.

Steve Fortune was elected vice president of learning and professional development. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Fortune earned an undergraduate degree in electrical and computer engineering at UMaine this spring.

Courtlandt McKinlay of Cheshire, Conn., was elected vice president of community involvement. She earned an undergraduate degree in communication from Boston University in 2005.

Before electing new officers, the association approved several changes in the organizational structure of the group, whose mission is to “provide personal and professional exploration opportunities for business graduate students via seminars, collaborative activities, meetings and social events.”

Scholarship

VEAZIE – The Veazie Garden Club is offering a scholarship to a college student from the Veazie, Orono or Old Town area who is currently enrolled in a horticulture or related field of study program. To apply, send a resume and a brief letter stating your goals and why you would like to receive the scholarship to: Barbara L. Higgins, 1408 State St., Veazie ME 04401.
