Man trying to light up drives his Jeep off the road

A Bangor man who apparently was attempting to light a cigarette drove his 1998 Jeep off the road and into a ditch Thursday night in Bangor, causing approximately $5,000 in damage.

Lewis Wood, 35, was driving north on Broadway when the single-car accident occurred, police officials said. Bangor Police Department received the emergency call at 7:49 p.m.

Wood complained of a left knee injury after the crash.

Two vehicles rolled over after one ran into the other around 5 p.m. Friday on Eastern Avenue at the Pierce Road intersection in Brewer. The incident appeared to be serious because both vehicles were severely damaged, but it resulted in only minor injuries.

Edward Vanidestine, 59, of Holden apparently started to lose control of his 2003 Toyota pickup and overcorrected, striking the 1994 Buick in front of him driven by Angel Farrar, 32, of Brewer.

The impact caused both vehicles to roll over, landing on their roofs.

Three minors were in Farrar’s vehicle, and all five people were taken to the hospital for treatment and later released.

The smell of marijuana wafting through Somerset Hall at the University of Maine in Orono led police to the dorm room of Joseph D’angelo, 19, who was charged with possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

There were four people in D’angelo’s room when UM police arrived just after midnight Saturday morning, but only he and another on-campus resident were summoned. Matthew Cammarata, 19, also was charged with possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

The two will appear before a 3rd District Court judge in Bangor on Jan. 18 for the incident.

Bangor police arrested a man and charged him with operating under the influence of alcohol after he was seen driving erratically as he was leaving the parking lot of Barnaby’s nightclub at the Ramada Inn.

Police noticed a white Subaru accelerating quickly through the Odlin Road club’s parking lot around 12:45 a.m. Saturday. They pulled the driver over and questioned him.

Matthew Sinshauser, 21, failed a field sobriety test and was taken to the Bangor Police Department, where an Intoxilyzer test showed his blood-alcohol level at .21.

Sinshauser was taken to Penobscot County Jail but was later released.

A Bangor man was arrested after an argument with a former girlfriend when he gave his brother’s name when questioned by police.

Police responded to the report of the argument on the Odlin Road just before noon Friday, where they found Michael Schwartz, 27, talking with a woman.

When questioned, he showed the officers his brother’s license and drove off before officers realized he had given a false name.

Schwartz was charged with violation of conditional release, a Class E crime; failure to give a correct name; and driving without a license.

He was taken to Penobscot County Jail, where he remained Sunday night. He is scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court on Jan. 18.

A couple walked into the Brewer Marden’s in their street shoes and attempted to walk out wearing brand new hiking boots Saturday afternoon, but they were apprehended by police.

Lori Cote, 39 of Milford and Jose Harvey, 31, a Bangor transient, were caught by Brewer police officers at 1:24 p.m. Saturday, and both were summoned for theft.

A Husson College student was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct Saturday morning after he and a friend were in a confrontation with campus security officers.

Matthew Lewis, 19, was arguing with campus security about a bottle of liquor found in his friend’s car, according to the police report. Bangor police went to the scene just past 3 a.m. and took Lewis into custody.

He was taken to Penobscot County Jail, where he remained Sunday night.

Two men were arrested at a Bangor nightclub and charged with criminal trespassing after they refused to leave Barnaby’s at the Ramada Inn, after being asked to do so several times by bar employees and police.

Jesse Nicholson, 21, of Brewer and Shawn Ross, 22, of Princeton were arrested just before 1 a.m. Sunday. They were taken to Penobscot County Jail but were later released. The two are scheduled to face a 3rd District Court judge on Jan. 18.
