ELLSWORTH – Maine State Police are investigating a case of suspected child abuse after a 1-month-old girl was admitted to a local hospital last weekend with head injuries.
Sgt. Troy Gardner, a detective with the Maine State Police, said Thursday that he received a call from a Department of Health and Human Services employee last Sunday.
The infant had been taken by at least one parent to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital with possible head injuries, potentially indicative of shaken baby syndrome, he said.
The child was later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she is still being treated. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening, Gardner said, but he declined to elaborate.
Both parents have been interviewed about the child’s injuries, but the detective wouldn’t elaborate or release their names.
Gardner said he is still investigating the incident and will likely prepare a case for the Hancock County District Attorney’s Office to see whether charges will be filed or not.
