Bangor earns rare victory against Cony Wadleigh, Godinez keys to win

BANGOR – It’s been an uneven season, to say the least, for the Bangor High girls basketball team.

But for a few minutes Friday afternoon, Bangor felt a little like a giant-killer after beating one of the top high school basketball programs in the state.

It took two overtimes, but an Amy Wadleigh game-winning basket and 17 points from Tawnya Godinez lifted the Bangor to a 51-49 triumph over the Cony of Augusta at Red Barry Gymnasium.

It may be the first time since 1991 that Bangor (4-3) has beaten Cony, Bangor coach Tom Tennett said. Sixth-seeded Bangor upset No. 3 Cony 54-36 in the Eastern Maine Class A quarterfinals that year.

“This definitely gives us a jump,” said Bangor’s Amy Hackett, who tied the game at the end of regulation. “We’ve been back and forth, trying to figure out what’s going to work. We’re starting to come together as a team.”

For Cony, now 5-2 and first in this week’s Heal point standings, this will be its first season with at least two regular-season losses since 1999-2000 when the Rams went 15-3 before losing in the regional final.

The teams fought through two bloody noses, an injury to Cony star Cassie Cooper, and eight minutes of overtime before Bangor prevailed.

“We’re finally getting our timing down and getting more comfortable on the floor,” said senior Emily Heath, who along with Wadleigh and Godinez keyed the final basket when Heath saw Wadleigh come off a screen set by Godinez and cut down the right baseline. Heath passed the ball inside to Wadleigh for a backdoor layup with 18 seconds left in the second overtime.

“The backdoor cut was there, something we had all night,” Wadleigh said. “We just used it. It was kind of a blur. [The ball] was just there.”

It was a patient play, which Bangor displayed early against Cony’s 1-3-1 zone. Bangor looked for openings, pulled the ball out if there weren’t opportunities, and found holes when it needed to.

Godinez drained a 3-pointer with 1:04 left in regulation to cut Cony’s lead to 41-39.

“I just did my thing and shot,” she said. “Those were key points that we needed.”

Cony’s Kristi Violette (18 points, 16 rebounds) missed two free-throw attempts with 34.5 remaining to set up Hackett’s game-tying heave.

Hackett grabbed an offensive rebound, fell back in a sea of players, and threw up the ball, which somehow went in before the buzzer sounded.

“There were arms and legs and bodies everywhere,” she said. “The ball was in front of me, so I grabbed it and threw it up. It wasn’t even a shot. I don’t know what you’d call it.”

After changing her jersey due to a bloody nose, Hackett hit a free throw to help Bangor to a 3-point lead with 49.4 seconds left in OT but responded with three foul shots to tie it at 44-44.

Wadleigh hit a hook shot with 1:15 left in the second overtime before her winner.

Cony had a chance to tie the game with 3.6 seconds to go when Violette was fouled, but she made just one of two free-throw attempts. Cony went 9-for-20 at the free-throw line.

“The ball came down into their hands and went up and in for that first overtime,” Cony coach Paul Vachon said. “We didn’t close it. We were on the line and unfortunately we didn’t close it.”

Cony held a 16-12 lead midway through the second quarter, but Bangor rallied for a 19-19 halftime tie. Cony was up 28-21 in the third and 38-29 in the fourth.

“We wanted to take any type of fast-break opportunities we had but then if we didn’t get something off the break we wanted to slow it down and be very patient with the ball,” Tennett said. “I thought especially in the first half we did a real good job with that.”

Cony was without Cooper for the fourth quarter and overtime after she stepped awkwardly on her left foot and was carried off with 9.8 seconds left in the third. She had nine points and four rebounds.

Cony wasn’t done for the day after the Bangor game. Cony is hosting the Capitol City Hoop Classic and was to play Lawrence of Fairfield in an exhibition game Friday at 8:15 p.m.
