Cook at Newport restaurant hit by pickup truck, killed

NEWPORT – A 48-year-old man was killed almost instantly Monday night when he was struck by a passing pickup truck.

Dong Wong was a cook at Hawaiian Paradise Restaurant on Route 2 and had arrived in Maine from China via New York City just a few weeks ago, said Sgt. Sanger Davis of the Newport Police Department.

Wong was walking in the travel lane of Route 2 in the area of the Newport/Plymouth Elementary School, headed downtown, when he was hit. Wong was wearing dark clothing and was not on the sidewalk, Davis said.

He was struck by a 1999 GMC pickup operated by Alan Alton, 30, of Newport. Davis charged Alton with operating after suspension.

The accident was reconstructed by Maine State Police Trooper Aaron Turcotte. Davis said no further charges will be filed against Alton.

“It was dark. It was raining. There were no witnesses,” Davis said.

Davis was assisted at the scene by Officers Jeremy Flynn and Dan Costain, Newport Rescue, and Sebasticook Valley Hospital Ambulance.
