Bangor teams set four records in relay sweep

ORONO – Bangor High School seniors Casey Quaglia and Cam Cormier continued their assault on the Eastern Maine Indoor Track League record books in Saturday’s Black Bear Relays at the University of Maine field house.

Quaglia set a meet record in the mile, cruising to the win in 4 minutes, 27.9 seconds, while Cormier ran to a 6.77 performance in the 60 dash.

Both athletes, along with Tyler Seekins and Chris Illingworth, helped the Rams also set a record in the 4×440 (3:34.51).

The Rams, one of the state-title contenders in Class A this winter, rolled up 195 points to win the 13-team competition.

Brewer was second with 78 points and Hampden Academy third with 55.

The Rams also took the girls meet with 139 points and set one record, while Brewer placed second with 98. Old Town finished third with 72 points.

In the boys meet, Quaglia also led the Rams to victories in the distance medley relay and sprint medley relay. Riley Masters finished second in the mile for Bangor, running a 4:38.19 and running the 1,200-meter leg on the distance medley (800-400-1200-mile).

Bangor’s long jump relay team of Kyle Vanidestine, Jimmy Clukey and Shane Walton combined for a distance of 56 feet, 8.50 inches, good for another meet record. The Rams also captured the triple jump and shot put relays with combined distances of 11 1-3/4 and 122-1 1/2, respectively.

In the girls meet, Old Town’s long sprint medley (400-200-200-800) team of Ashleigh Madden, Amanda Ewing, Erin St. Peter and Hilary Maxim ran to a 4:34.43, while Hampden Academy’s 4×200 thrower’s relay team of Rizalina Arce, Justine Cook, Kim Wilson and Lucy Mardosa clocked a record- setting 2:30.85.

In the team competition, the Rams only won two individual events and two track relays, but they had just enough to hold off a young but improving Brewer squad.

Bangor’s Dee Wilbur won the 60-yard hurdles in 10.02 seconds and Kendra Lenz the 60 dash in 7.85.

The second girls’ meet record was set by the Rams’ sprint medley team of Lenz, Jennie Lucy, Katie Porter and Brittany Chapman, who ran to a 3:07.78. Bangor’s 4×440 team of Chapman, Porter, Jenny Leach and Kelly Schenck took that event in 4:37.59.

Brewer was victorious in the 4×880, with Brooke Madden, Bekah Clark, Ashley Geiser and Katie Snow posting a 10:51.26, while Old Town’s distance medley team of Maxim, Ashleigh Madden, Keane and Eliza Tibbits took that event in 13:36.23.
