‘Myths and Legends,’ 10 p.m. TV Land

Everyone has heard of some urban legends, unexplained happenings that take on lives of their own.

This six-part series, produced by the company responsible for the voyeuristic “Behind the Music,” seeks to debunk Hollywood’s most fabled rumors.

It tackles such weighty questions as who really inspired Carly Simon’s No. 1 hit “You’re So Vain,” did “The Beav” die in the Vietnam War, was “Gong Show” host Chuck Barris a CIA assassin and did Cass Elliott of the Mamas and the Papas die by choking on a ham sandwich?

So, yeah, no one is going to mistake “Myths and Legends” for a History Channel offering. If you really don’t care if Barry Williams was high on the set on “The Brady Bunch” for a 1973 episode, turn over to PBS.

But “Myths and Legends,” narrated wittily by Khandi Alexander (“CSI: Miami”), provides a kind of goofy fun, as the experts and a host of near- and never-famous celebrities offer up their opinions as to what truly happened in these incidents.

So if you’re curious about whether the “Amityville Horror” house is really haunted, tune in and find out. (Dale McGarrigle, BDN)
