Bangor teams take separate paths to wins

ORONO – Thursday’s Eastern Maine Indoor Track League meet at the University of Maine field house marked the season’s halfway point, and Bangor coach Maynard Walton’s girls almost experienced deja u.

“If you remember from last year, we lost this meet and we had a good team,” the veteran coach said.

The Rams, who trailed a fast, young Brewer team and talented Old Town squad most of the night, got 10 points from Robin Treadwell in two of the meet’s final events (first in the high jump, second in triple jump) to squeak past the Witches and Coyotes with 71 points.

Old Town ended up second in the four-team field with 61, Brewer third with 60 and Orono scored 21.5.

The Bangor boys continued to run over its competition, scoring a whopping 122.5 points to runner-up Brewer’s 37.

Old Town was third with 35 and Orono fourth with 21.5.

In the girls meet, Walton wasn’t expecting his team to win, but when Treadwell, Catherine LeClair and Becca Bogan went 2-3-4 in the triple jump – all three jumpers surpassed the 30-foot mark – the Rams’ victory was secure.

“I didn’t expect to win this meet,” Walton said. “But we had tremendous improvement, especially in that triple jump, where we had three girls over 30 feet. That really broke the back of the talented team of Old Town and Brewer of course.”

Treadwell, who’s leap of 5 feet was good enough for a win in the high jump, recorded a 31-0.00 in the triple jump while LeClair and Bogan went 30-4.00 and 30-3.25, respectively.

Bangor had three individual winners, including mid-distance standout Jennie Lucy, who won a showdown with Old Town’s Hilary Maxim in the 800.

“It’s good to have her to go back and forth with, it makes us both faster,” said Lucy, who held off Maxim to win in 2 minutes, 24.37 seconds.

“I wanted to get a really good time for states. I’m really happy with that,” Lucy said. “I couldn’t have run those times without [Maxim].”

Lucy also ran third leg on Bangor’s winning 4×880 relay team, where Rachel Huber, Lindsey Mercier and Jennie Foley teamed up with Lucy for a 10:42.95 effort.

Bangor’s other individual winners were Dee Wilbur’s 9.88-second performance in the 60 hurdles and Kendra Lenz’s 7.89 finish in the 60.

Both Old Town and Brewer had stellar individual performances. In addition to her 2:24.61 effort in the 800, Maxim captured the 2-mile run in 11:48.85. Classmate Eliza Tibbits turned in a second in the 2 mile (12:27.13) and cruised to victory in the mile in 5:46.61.

Heather Jackson picked up a pair of victories for the Coyotes, in the triple jump (31-3.25) and pole vault (8 feet). Amanda Ewing took the 200 in 28.10.

Sarah Risser’s 1:03.10 effort in the 400 was good for first for the Witches while Carolynn Tuck’s 15-1.25 was the top mark in the long jump.

In the boys meet, Bangor’s distance duo of Riley Masters and Casey Quaglia left a trail of sparks on the UMaine track, each posting fast times.

Masters cruised to victory in the mile in 4:36.33 and ran to second in both the 800 (2:06.33) and 2 mile (10:23.86).

“I think I can do a little bit better, it was hard going into the 800 coming off a 4:30 mile,” Masters said. “I think I could’ve done a little bit better [in the 800] if I was running fresh.”

Masters said that the mile is his best event, and that “I think I could do a little bit better in the 2 mile, too.”

Teammate Quaglia continued to post consistently fast times, clocking a 9:59.44 in the 2 mile and 2:00.96 in the 800.

“I’ve been trying to break 10 [minutes], this week I was really shooting for it,” he said. “The last 200 my coach was saying go for it. Once I got the go, it was just all heart.”

Ram sprinter Cam Cormier took his first career stab at the 400, and blazed to victory in 51.46 seconds, and added a first-place effort in the 60 in 6.86.

“Everybody came through, Cam had the most incredible 400 this state has seen for a while, I think,” Quaglia said. “Everybody’s stepping up to the plate, everybody’s doing their job, [and] Riley’s running great.”

Bangor’s other individual winners were Curtis Coleman’s 24.23 finish in the 200 and Robert Seccareccia’s 47-7.75 heave in the shot put.

Old Town jumping standout Brandon Gastia continued his fine season, capturing both the long and triple jumps with leaps of 19-3.50 and 42-5.00. Teammate Sam Petrie had three attempts at 6 feet in the high jump, but missed and settled for a fine 5-10 effort.

Orono’s James Berry narrowly missed clearing 14 feet in the pole vault. He came in first with a vault of 12 feet and captured the 60 hurdles in 8.07.
