East Machias meeting to air state school plan

EAST MACHIAS – Concerns over Gov. John Baldacci’s plan to reduce the number of school superintendents and create huge school districts has prompted East Machias officials to call a special meeting.

Selectman Chairman Kenneth Davis said the town is in a unique position because it is not part of a school administrative district, a union or a consolidated school district. Two years ago, East Machias separated from SAD 77 and became a municipally run school.

The town already is sharing expenses such as a superintendent, bookkeeping, secretarial and special education director with Union 102 in Machias.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at the East Machias town hall on Route 1. The selectmen, school board and superintendent will be on hand to answer questions.
