ORONO – Two University of Maine hockey players have left the team and withdrawn from school.
Freshmen Zach Sill, 18, of Colchester County, Nova Scotia, and Tyler Czuba, 21, of Kelowna, British Columbia, were suspended Monday from the team for an “indefinite period of time,” according to UM spokesman Joe Carr.
“They have both withdrawn from school for personal reasons and will not return,” UM hockey coach Tim Whitehead said Thursday. “I’m not in a position to comment on it any further at this time.”
Neither Brent Williamson, assistant athletic director for public relations, nor Carr would release Thursday why the players had been suspended.
“Officially, from our standpoint, they have left the team and have withdrawn from the University of Maine,” Williamson said.
Carr did confirm that the students’ case had been under review to see if they had violated the student code of conduct in addition to the athletic code, but that the inquiry became unnecessary when the students withdrew from UM.
The student code is a broader document that encompasses the entire student body, while the athletic code is more specific to the needs of athletes and the expectations that come with participating on a team.
Tonight, the Bears play Boston University at Alfond Arena.
Both men were left-wingers for the Black Bears.
Sill played in six of Maine’s 19 games this season, scoring one goal and an assist. He had played in just one of the last eight games.
Czuba didn’t see as much of the ice, playing in three games with one assist. He hadn’t played in the last five games after playing in the previous three.
