DEXTER – This town has always been known for its patriotism, but its love of country will be taken a step further by the local posts of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

Shirley B. Carter VFW Post 4298 and Poulliot-Seavey American Legion Post No. 53 have each offered to purchase 24 American flags that will be matched by the Cole Family Foundation, according to Town Manager Judy Doore.

Representatives of the two veterans’ organizations told Doore on Friday that they were willing to donate the flags to the town to be installed on utility poles on Spring, Church and Grove streets, Legion member Tony Larson confirmed Sunday. In exchange, the members have asked that the town install and maintain the flags.

Doore said she would ask the Town Council for its blessing at the February meeting.

“We are very pleased- it’s a time when patriotism is foremost in all our minds and financially we wouldn’t be able to do this sort of a program,” Doore said.

Main Street is the only street in town where American flags are displayed on utility poles, she said.

The cost to each organization will be more than $700, Doore said, an amount the town would not be able to raise through the budget.

The only requirement from the foundation is that the flags be displayed from May through Labor Day for at least two years or until the flags are unserviceable, Doore said.
