Events scheduled to mark Martin Luther King day

Several events are scheduled around the state today and Tuesday to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Among them are:

Monday events:

. The 11th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Keeping the Dream Alive” breakfast will be held 8:30-10:30 a.m. in the commons of Stoddard Hall at the University of Maine, sponsored by the Greater Bangor Area NAACP and the UM Human Rights Coalition. The Rev. Forrest Pritchett, a professor at Seton Hall University, is the keynote speaker. The event also will feature a speech by U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, and greeting guests will be Gov. John Baldacci and university President Robert Kennedy. Tickets will be available at the door and cost $20 for adults, $5 for senior citizens, students and children under age 12. . The 21st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day community breakfast will be held 7:30-9 a.m. at Senior Spectrum’s Muskie Center, 38 Gold St., in Waterville. The keynote speaker is Noel Bonam, director of Maine’s Office of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, who will explore building cross-cultural relationships. The event, co-sponsored by Senior Spectrum and the Waterville Rotary Club, also will feature discussions and songs. Tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for children 12 and under. . Belfast Martin Luther King Jr. candlelight march and celebration. The candlelight march begins at 4:30 p.m. in front of the post office and ends a few blocks away at First Church, where portions of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech will be read. Guest speaker Sarah Pringle-Lewis is scheduled to speak at 6 p.m. Her “Meaning to be Free” talk will concentrate on the historical and spiritual antecedents to the work of King.

. A candlelight vigil will be held in remembrance of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 5-6 p.m. on the Main Street bridge in Blue Hill. The vigil is sponsored by Peninsula Peace & Justice. All are welcome to join and are reminded to bring candles. For information call 326-4405.

Tuesday events:

. The Legislature will pause immediately after its session at the State House in Augusta, at approximately 11:30 a.m. or noon, to recognize the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Roger Richmond, a Freeport designer and professor of architecture at the University of Maine at Augusta, will deliver a brief lecture and lead a discussion to honor the man who led America’s civil rights movement. He will have on display his design for a national memorial in King’s honor.
