WOODLAND – Maine State Police were aggressively chasing leads Monday afternoon as they worked to nab two men who investigators say are responsible for violently beating and robbing two Woodland men.
The incident happened Friday evening at the Roland Fortin Used Car Dealership Garage.
Maine State Police Sgt. Julie Bergan said Roland Fortin, 60, and his friend and mechanic, Arnold Bubar, 37, were working at the Carson Road garage when two masked men armed with wooden clubs entered the facility at around 7 p.m.
Trooper Fred Thomas, the primary investigator on the case, said the assailants took Fortin and Bubar by surprise.
Police said the men demanded money and beat Fortin and Bubar on the head with the clubs.
It is not clear at this point if the clubs were brought in by the robbers or were taken from somewhere around the facility.
All four men moved outside, where the victims were robbed before the assailants fled on foot.
Between $11,000 and $12,000 was stolen during the robbery, Thomas said Monday afternoon.
The men were later seen getting into a vehicle parked at the intersection of the Carson and Fowler roads.
Fortin was taken to Cary Medical Center in Caribou for initial treatment and then airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland with head injuries.
Thomas said that Fortin suffered a cracked skull and a concussion. A spokesman at Maine Medical Center said Fortin was discharged late Monday afternoon.
Bubar was treated for head injuries and later released from the Caribou hospital.
No arrests have been made, but Thomas said investigators had “some people of interest” they were trying to contact.
If captured, the men will be charged with felony robbery and assault and may face other charges, according to Thomas.
State police Detectives Adam Stoutamyer and Darrin Crane are assisting with the investigation, along with Trooper Kim Espling.
