When a Bangor woman tried to buy cigarettes at a local convenience store Monday, the clerk suspected the cash was counterfeit and alerted police.

When Bangor police arrived, they discovered that Tonya Ashe, 45, had a car that wasn’t registered, and after removing the car’s license plates summoned her for operating after suspension and driving an unregistered vehicle.

Ashe told police she received the bill from a prior transaction at a different store.

Police said Tuesday they were investigating a similar case involving counterfeit money at the same store an hour earlier.

Bangor police officers were busy Tuesday morning because of slick roads that resulted in dozens of minor accidents, including 14 recorded between 4 and 5 a.m., Sgt. Jim Owens said Tuesday.

Only five of the 14 had more than $1,000 in damage, and no serious injuries were reported.

Brewer police went to the scene of an incident on Eastern Avenue just before 6 p.m. Monday that resulted in a man being arrested for allegedly assaulting two family members.

Police said Jeffrey Eaton, 23, of Brewer was combative with police, and that resulted in an additional charge of resisting arrest.

Eaton was released from the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor after his first appearance in 3rd District Court on Tuesday.
