The University of Maine men’s hockey program has landed an instate recruit for the 2008-2009 or 2009-2010 season.
Lewiston’s Mark Anthoine, the second leading scorer for the Portland Junior Pirates’ A team, has verbally committed to attend Maine on a scholarship.
Anthoine, who is 16 and a junior at Lewiston High School, is leading the Junior Pirates in goals with 28 to go with 12 assists in 30 Atlantic Hockey League games. Including non-league games, he has 38 goals and 24 assists in 38 games.
He played for the Pirates’ Junior B team last year and had 20 goals and 26 assists in 35 games.
“Mark is a complete player. He is really focused,” said Junior Pirates coach Jay Pecora. “He is an awesome offensive player who isn’t afraid to compete. As a 16-year-old playing against some 20 year-olds, he isn’t afraid to go into the corners. He’s very good with the puck.
“The big thing about him is his hockey sense. He knows the game,” added Pecora, who expects Anthoine to eventually be chosen in the NHL draft.
Anthoine, who chose Maine over Harvard, said he is “really excited” about coming to Maine.
“It’s the right fit for my style of play and what I’m looking to do in the future,” said Anthoine. “Maine has always been a powerhouse in hockey and not many Maine players get the chance to play there. It’s a good place to get an education.”
The 6-foot, 178-pound Anthoine also said he “really enjoyed the players” as well as coach Tim Whitehead and his staff.
He said he will attend Maine when he feels it’s the best time for him to come.
Anthoine’s coming to Maine is dependent upon his being accepted into the school and meeting NCAA Clearinghouse requirements.
