A Fare to remember

It always feels good to support a worthy cause, but at Midcoast Children’s Services’ Fabulous Food Fare, it tastes good, too. Offerings from 30 area restaurants will tempt the taste buds as guests wander through the ballrooms of the Samoset Resort in Rockland. Among the highlights are the Waterfront restaurant’s dressed salmon (pictured), prime rib from Whale’s Tooth Pub, soups from Silver Lane Bistro and steamed mussels from Great Eastern Mussel. A silent auction will feature the work of 65 local artists, as well. The event will take place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, and tickets cost $50 per person. For information or to reserve tickets, call 594-8474.

Brain food

Let’s have a round of a-claws for two students who have received $5,000 each in scholarships from the Maine Lobster Promotion Council. Meghan Conlogue, 20, of Lewiston and Candace Poirier, 26, of Portland are the inaugural recipients of scholarships to the Culinary Institute of America. The MLPC will award a total of $75,000 – five $5,000 scholarships a year for the next three years – to Maine students who want to study at the cooking school in Hyde Park, N.Y. In addition, the council will provide lobster products at several CIA alumni events and participate in educational demonstrations at the school. For information, visit www.ciachef.edu or call (800) CULINARY for admissions.

Food and folk

For the first time, the American Folk Festival on the Bangor Waterfront will have a “Taste of Maine” vendor tent, where the state’s specialty food makers can sell their wares. For application information, vendors should contact the festival office at 992-2630 or visit www.americanfolkfestival.com.
