Resilient Burdin helps PCHS defeat Schenck in OT

GUILFORD – Brandon London’s basket late in overtime gave the Piscataquis boys basketball a three-point lead as they held off Schenck of East Millinocket 61-59 Saturday in high school action.

Roy Burdin tossed in 16 of his game-high 23 points in the second half after he had sustained a cut under his left eye in the second quarter that eventually required nine stitches. He also pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked three shots for Piscataquis.

London finished with 13 points and Mike Wharff added 11 as the Pirates avenged their only loss, a 67-35 setback Dec. 18 against Schenck at East Millinocket.

Chris Byron scored 20 points to pace the Wolverines while Mike Lowell netted 10. James Graham and Kerry Thompson tallied nine points each.

At Kennebec Ice Arena in Augusta, Reid McLaughlin scored two goals and had an assist while Dylan Fitzpatrick and Marc Relford each added a goal and two assists for Brewer.

Nick Risser chipped in with a goal and an assist for the 10-2 Witches and Andrew Richardson and Ryan Nadeau added a goal apiece. Dave Perry had two goals and Aaron Saunders made 14 saves.

Zoe Fisk and Peter Caradonna each scored a goal for 6-4 Gardiner. Zach Montell and Cody Jean each recorded an assist and goalie Chris Howe made 38 saves.

Orono 12, Foxcroft 1

At Sawyer Arena, Bangor, Ben Perry scored three goals to lead Orono to victory over Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft.

Brandon Paul had two goals and three assists for the 9-2-1 Red Riots and Jordan Dudley added two goals and two assists. Kirk Francis scored twice and provided an assist as Dan Ohno and Sean Babin each had a goal and an assist. Mark Coutier scored as Jared Bussel made 17 saves on 18 shots.

Mike Winkler scored in the first period on a Brian Saunder assist for the 0-9-1 Ponies. Chad Phillips blocked 35 of 47 shots.

Houlton-Hodgdon 5, Hampden 2

At T.J. Ryan Center, Brewer, Josh McGuire scored two goals and assisted another to lift Houlton-Hodgdon over Hampden Academy.

Chris McGuire scored twice for the 6-5 Blackhawks. Craig Buxton had a goal and two assists and Sharif Abouleish provided two assists. Levi Ledger made 16 saves on 18 shots.

Ben Magaw and Tim Henderson scored for the 1-10 Broncos. Ethan Chase and Nate Rocker each provided and assist. Matt Albert stopped 29 of 34 shots.

Presque Isle 3, John Bapst 2 (OT)

At Presque Isle, Brennan Shaw scored the winning goal off of a Parker Hovey assist 3:46 into overtime to lead Presque Isle past John Bapst of Bangor.

Ben McPherson scored a first period goal for the 7-4-1 Wildcats and Greg Cyr tied it in the third. Spencer Deschene, Brandon Daigle, Dylan Collins, and McPherson provided assists. Ethan Hill blocked 21 of 23 shots.

John Cooper and Alex Yates scored for the 8-4 Crusaders. Tyler Smith and Ethan Sale each had an assist. Derek Duff made 24 saves on 27 shots.

At Presque Isle, Bri Hanscom scored 29 points as Mattanawcook Academy edged Presque Isle in overtime.

Michelle Paul added 18 points for the Lynx.
