BANGOR – The Varney automobile dealership of Bangor has taken over Downeast dealership’s line of Buick cars and SUVs, completing Varney’s offerings of General Motors vehicles.
“We welcome all Downeast’s prior Buick customers and we look forward to servicing them and earning new customers,” said Matt Campbell, dealer administrator at Varney.
The transaction was prompted by a request from General Motors to sell all its lines under one roof, and by slowing Buick sales at Downeast, Campbell said.
Ed Darling, owner of Downeast, declined to comment on the transaction and a call to Buick headquarters was not returned. Downeast, located on Wilson Street in Brewer, continues to sell Toyota and Scion vehicles.
Varney now sells General Motors’ Buick, Pontiac and GMC lines, in addition to Mazda vehicles, at its store on Hogan Road in Bangor. Varney also sells General Motors’ Chevrolet line at its store in Pittsfield, Campbell said.
Campbell declined to give the cost of the purchase, which was finalized in mid-December.
“We’re the state’s largest Pontiac dealer,” Campbell said. “Buick customers can go to a GM store for everything they need – parts and service. We have all the necessary tools. This was a transaction that makes sense for us.”
