An entertaining matchup of two of Maine’s postgraduate basketball teams is scheduled for Lee Academy tonight as the Pandas will host two-time defending New England Prep School Athletic Conference champion Bridgton Academy.
The game is scheduled for 6 p.m., just after a 4:30 p.m. girls varsity basketball game between Lee and Bangor Christian.
The second-year Lee program will bring a 19-10 record into its second meeting of the year against a Bridgton team that has been nationally ranked in the prep school ranks.
When the teams met last week at Bridgton, the Wolverines emerged with a 100-87 victory in what Lee coach Carl Parker described as “a good game, a physical game. They’re very talented.”
Lee’s 15-player roster includes two players who already have signed National Letters of Intent to join Division I college programs next year in 6-foot-7 forward Travon Wilcher of Springfield, Mass., (Massachusetts) and 6-3 guard Alan Branch of Fresno, Texas (Central Connecticut), as well as several others that likely will land at Division I schools next fall.
They include 6-2 guard Corey Bingham of Lynn, Mass., and 6-5 Chris Baez of Kissimmee, Fla., the team’s leading scorers, along with 7-1 Tomasz Kwiatowski of Bidgoszcz, Poland, 6-3 point guard Nate Tomlinson of Heathcote, Australia, 6-2 Dorian Williams of Teaneck, N.J., 6-5 DeShawn Gibbons of Boston, 6-2 Jimmy Chaudry of Brockton, Mass., and 6-3 Sesoo Ipkah of Williamston, N.J., who typically draws the toughest defensive assignment.
“We’ve got kids who are going to be here one year or two, and they’re battling for playing time,” said Parker. “They know the clock is ticking, and they’re worried about scholarships and what they’re going to do next year.
“But they’ve worked hard without much of a break, and I’m pleased overall with how they’ve played.”
Bridgton brings a 20-1 record into the game. Coach Whit Lesure’s club is led by 6-8 Justin Burwell, who has signed with St. John’s, and South Carolina-bound Aaron Ellis, as well as a strong guard corps featuring Greg Hill, Paris Horne and Clayfell Harris.
The Wolverines’ lone loss this season came last Friday night in a 76-74 decision to Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield, a team Lee has beaten twice in setting up what is becoming a highly competitive series of rivalries among the state’s postgraduate programs.
“I think it’s good for everybody,” said Parker. “It’s a level of basketball I think a lot of fans are missing out on, really.”
