FARMINGTON – Kari Simpson blocked the potential game-winning shot late in regulation, then made two key free throws in overtime Wednesday to lead the University of Maine-Farmington to a 66-62 women’s basketball victory over previously unbeaten and 19th-ranked Maine Maritime Academy of Castine.

Simpson poured in 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to help the Beavers (13-3) improve to 9-0 in North Atlantic Conference play.

“It was a great game,” UMF coach Jamie Beaudoin said of the contest that featured 14 lead changes and 12 ties. “When it finished, we happened to be in the lead.”

Karen Sirois netted 12 points for UMF and Amanda Byrne handed out seven assists.

Alyssa Burns paced the Mariners with a game-high 28 points. Shelley Gott-Stilwell contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Simpson had rebounded a missed 3-pointer by Karen Sirois and scored to make it 58-58 with 29 seconds left in regulation.

UMF took the upper hand in OT on baskets by Byrne and Caitlyn Laflin and held on.

MMA committed 26 turnovers to 15 for the Beavers.

“We did a very nice job defensively,” Beaudoin said. “We executed down the stretch and we played good defense.”

Brad Durr led Lyndon State (Vt.) with 18 points. Brent Fowler and Joe Visker added 10 each.
